Apple Walnut Scones

Apple Walnut Scones

Scones are crunchy on the outside, soft and full of flavor on the inside! These scones are perfect for afternoon tea or a breakfast treat. They are not too sweet and can be enjoyed with or without glaze on top!

Today is Johnny Appleseed Day! On this day we honor the man who made apple trees grow heavy with the bounty of their fruit across most of the United States. On September 26th, we commemorate his birthday and celebrate his legendary wit, wisdom and enduring story.

A Little About Johnny Appleseed

John Chapman (the name he was born with) was born on September 26th 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts. Unfortunately there isn’t much information regarding John’s early life, other then his mother passed away when he was a toddler. Shortly after his father packed up their bags and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1797, Chapman began to propagate apple seeds in northwestern Pennsylvania. Fascinated by how apple trees grew, he continued propagating seeds into the frontier of West Virginia, followed by Ohio, Indiana. Eventually making it to Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin.

As John traveled through all these states he became everyone’s to-go man for orchards that were in poor condition. There are many stories of him nursing orchards back to health. John never hesitated to teach people about how to take care of the orchards. He began to grown a reputation of being wise, extremely humble, and caring. Along the way he become known as Johnny Appleseed.

What better way to honor Johnny Appleseed and all the work that he did then to share an apple treat with you guys!

Apple Walnut Scones

Full of apple chunks and jam packed with flavor, these apple walnut scones taste great right out of the oven. We love to add a drizzle layer of sweetness! This means glaze!!! If you aren’t a fan of sweet, these scones taste great without it too. The chopped walnuts add an extra layer of texture that makes these scones perfect for a breakfast treat or a tea time snack!

Instructions

Preheat oven to 425F degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cinnoman, baking powder, and salt together.

Add butter into flour mixture and using a pastry blender or a fork. Mix until crumbly.

Add chopped apples and walnuts, stir.

Pour in milk and stir until incorporated.

Remove the batter from the bowl and place on a powdered sugar covered surface. Knead about 6-8 times.

Form a rectangle, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top. Then cut into 8 diagonal pieces (they should look like triangles at the end) and place in a baking sheet. Or place into a scone pan.

Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until browned on the top.

Take scones out of the oven and let rest. Meanwhile mix powdered sugar and milk together to make a glaze.

Drizzle over each scone. (Optional)

Enjoy Warm or Cold!

Straight out of the oven with glaze is our favorite way to enjoy these Apple Walnut Scones. They are equally as good the next day with a cup of tea and coffe. We hope you enjoyed our Jonny Appleseed tribute recipe. Don’t forget to make tons of delicious apple treats this Fall season.
